AI Optimization for SEOs – New Strategies in 2025
The rise of AI has sparked a firestorm of discussion across the digital marketing landscape, and nowhere is this more apparent than on LinkedIn, where SEO professionals are actively debating the future of their industry and the implications of AIO/GEO/AEO or whatever else we’d like to call it.
While some are welcoming a new era of efficiency, others express concern and a need for adoption – something which is not new to the SEO industry itself. We find ourselves constantly re-inventing ourselves these last two decades, always needing to find new angle.
In personally speaking to experts in our field, those with more than 10 years of experience, I have continued to hear the phrase “what’s old is new”. A resurgence in antiquated tactics and rules which were not to be broken from the start of our careers appears to be what’s winning in AEO the last 2 months. With AI Search Engines being less sophisticated than the modern Google and Bing systems, it appears they can be more easily gamed.
At AI Review Labs, we’ve been closely following this conversation, and it’s clear that the prevailing sentiment isn’t one of fear, but of strategic evolution – as we have always needed to stay on our toes as SEOs. We know SEO isn’t dead; it’s just getting an overhaul. This is no different than when Map listings starting appears; when the Quick Answer popped in to cut away traffic to our sites; when the People Also Asked boxes reduced our top and middle funnel opportunities. We must pivot and adapt to survive – it’s Digital Marketing Darwinism at its finest.
The Core Pillars Remain, but the Tactics Evolve
A central theme in the LinkedIn discourse is the idea that the fundamentals of SEO – Content, Authority, Technical SEO, and User Experience – remain at the top of the Center of Excellence for SEOs and our work to be successful.
- Content: The focus has always been over the last 5 years that there is a shift from keyword-stuffed articles to creating high-quality, authoritative content that can be easily parsed and synthesized by AI models. This means structuring content with clear headers, FAQs, and pull quotes, and focusing on long-form guides and problem-solving content that provides real value.
- Authority: While backlinks are still relevant, the concept of digital authority is broadening. SEOs are discussing the importance of unlinked brand mentions on forums and trusted publications, as AI models use these signals to determine credibility.
- Technical SEO: AI is seen as a powerful tool for automating repetitive technical tasks, like redirect mapping, doorway page creation and on-page optimizations. The emphasis continues to be increasing discoverability, making sites easily crawlable for both traditional and AI-specific bots, and using new technologies like semantic search and structured data to help AI understand your content. And let’s not forget, while Google and Bing figured out page rendering decades ago, the systems ingesting data seem not to have done so just yet.
- Brand Evangelization: Now more than ever before, over the last year, it appears that companies which have a strong marketing presence for their branded name, campaigns, product launches and PR based releases, are where they can continue to win higher and fresh placements into AI Overviews, and other ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude results.

The Rise of “AI Optimization” (AIO)
The conversation has moved beyond simply using AI as a tool to a new discipline entirely: optimizing for AI-powered search engines. This is not about trying to “trick” the system, but about creating content that is specifically designed to be cited and surfaced in AI-generated answers.
This new approach, which some are calling AI Optimization (AIO) or Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), prioritizes:
- Visibility, not just Clicks: In the age of “zero-click” search, where AI overviews provide a full answer without a user needing to click on a link, the goal is to be the source that AI trusts. This means tracking how often your brand is mentioned in AI-generated responses and the sentiment of those mentions, not just website traffic.
- Topical Authority and Entity Authority: The focus is on being the go-to source for a specific subject. AI engines are also increasingly attributing expertise to individuals, not just domains. This makes thought leadership and publishing across platforms like LinkedIn, YouTube, and Reddit even more critical for SEO professionals.
- Brand Reputation: AI models don’t just summarize facts—they form opinions. SEO professionals are now talking about the importance of managing a brand’s “AI footprint” and ensuring that a consistent, positive narrative is being presented to AI models.
The (Current) Future of SEO: A Call to Action for Q3 and Q4 of 2025
The shift to AIO is not just a theoretical discussion, it’s already impacting performance. As more than half of all searches now end without a click, SEO and AIO teams must broaden their focus and skills. In fact, some sectors, like technology, have already seen a 10% decline in organic traffic since October.
To adapt and thrive, SEO professionals must evolve their strategies for 2025. This includes:
- Brand Mentions: Increase brand mentions in link-building campaigns and external backlink velocity.
- Structured Data: Validate and expand schema markup to help AI better understand and parse your content.
- Off-site Presence: Negotiate cross-functional collaborations to ensure content and brand mentions are placed on platforms like Reddit, Wikipedia, and YouTube.
- Reputation Management: Actively manage your brand’s reputation and its “AI footprint” to ensure a consistent, positive narrative is presented to AI models.
The bottom line is that the most successful SEOs will be those who embrace this evolution, treating AI as a complementary tool that enhances human expertise rather than a replacement for it. The future belongs to those who learn to speak the language of AI while never forgetting their ultimate audience.
